Watchmaker - Erased From The Memory Of Man
Lately I’m discovering more and more grindcore that I like. Not the gore, not the groovy, but the extremely noisy. So noisy, it gets on your nerves, and I developed a weird interest in that. Watchmaker is exactly such a band. And thank Earache Records for re-releasing the hard-to-get Willowtip Records material, otherwise I would probably never have seen this record at all!

The booklet has a quote in it that is an exact description of what this band makes. It goes as following: ‘the common denominator of the universe is not harmony – it’s chaos, hostility and murder’. That sums up pretty much the first three words that come to one’s mind when auditing this album. Very similar to what I recently discovered from Australia, the infamous Hailstones Kill 200.

It consists of very chaotic (practically incoherent) screaming, riffing and drumming, which occasionally makes it quite difficult to find the structures in all of it. But I’m guessing that will become clear after I’ve heard it like fifty times or so. The recording quality is part to blame for that as well, but since the music is chaotic as hell anyway, this only contributes to the mayhem. The music has a nice metalcore groove to it now and then, and toys around with rhythmical and experimental noise stuff throughout the album. That combined with grindcore indeed creates total chaos.

There’s not very much more to say about this stuff. If you’re into terrible noise recordings that make you think ‘what the fuck is happening here?’ then this will prove to be a nice addition to your collection.
