Das Ich - Cabaret
Das Ich, amongst others, are considered founders of the dark electronic goth scene. Their sound is very recognizable and hasn’t changed much over the years. However, this new album Cabaret is a bit different than its priors.
Cabaret has a lot of acoustic instruments on it, as well as some vocals of Bruno Kramm, which make this album a lot more diverse than most Das Ich albums. Also Marianne Iser’s opera vocals on Fluch (Ahnung) are a nice addition to the album.
On the other side, Das Ich really returned to their roots when it comes to the electronic parts. Heavy beats and dark atmospheric sound collages, but it sounds catchier than ever. In stead of becoming a parody on themselves, Das Ich dares to try new things in the conventional gothic scene, without becoming commercial.
I’ve always liked Das Ich, but this is definitely their best album so far. It’s very diverse and has a great build up. Of course there are some great dance floor songs on Cabaret, but also bombastic hymns and claustrophobic minimalism.
The artwork looks very good. Ackermann portrayed as a marionette, Kramm as the puppeteer, in a dark, spooky theatre.
