Wattamezz - Soulfuel
the biography of Wattamezz takes us back to 1994 when they came together for the first time. After years of drinking and playing for fun things turned out seriously when their single ‘Suicide Jesus’ was released and much attention from the underground circuit was drawn. Not long after the release of their single Wattamezz entered a demo competition run by the TV show Metalblender on the national television in Norway. Wattamezz won the demo competition which included a record deal. So here we are in 2006 Soulfuel is the first full-length album of Wattamezz

The album Soulfuel of Wattamezz starts with a simple intro and after a few seconds we’re away on our first song ‘The Hollow’. It’s a nice up-tempo song with some nice riffs and cool solo’s. The second song ‘Modern symbology’ starts very powerful with some nice drumming and sound effects. After a while the song turns into a semi ballad which sounds very boring to me without any inspiration at all.

The third song ‘Behind closed doors’ is also my favourite song of the record. This song rocks completely, everything on this song is right and most important of all it sounds really tight. Too bad I can’t say that of the next song ‘Sweet Sister’ it’s certainly not the greatest song on the album. So it’s a total relief ‘When You’ve Gone The Devils Distance’ is up next.  Finally Wattamezz shows what its capable of, the peddle goes to the metal. This is how it’s supposed to be done.

Around track 7 we’ll find ‘Suicide Jesus’; this is the song which got it all started for Wattamezz. It’s a down tempo rock song but it’s nothing special there are far more better songs on the album take ‘Devils Dance’ for example the song starts and it blasts away leaving me stunned behind after four minutes.

With bands like this I’m always curious where they stand if we’re 5 years further. Are they still playing that one song or are they evolved to a great band. The first thing that I noticed was that it all sounds very familiar to me. Names like Dream Theatre and Blue Öster Cult immediately passed my mind when I heard the album. But the fact is that it is their debut album, and with that noticed in the back of my head I’d say that it’s a compliment to be compared with these two bands. Overall I’m not completely satisfied but Wattamezz is certainly on the right track and has the potential to write great songs.
