Circular - Control
Being together since September 2004, Circular has since then evolved from zero to being one of the most promising rockbands from Breda. In one year Circular has played in every big venue in Breda and in other cities as well, including a show as a supporting act in the Graanbeurs for Dutch metalband Orphanage. They also won the 1st place at "Uit je Hok 2004", a bandcontest for all new local bands.
So, a local band this time…let’s see what they have to offer. At least I’m pleased by the cover of this EP, reminds me somewhat of Tool, which is a good sign. But before you start thinking about Tool too much, that’s not what Circular is about!
Circular is about rock. They create a nice mixture of rock with a few drips of nu-metal sauce. The first track on this EP is quite attractive. But as a whole, this one is definitely not going to end in my yearlist. Of course there’s some catchy parts on this disc, but which disc doesn’t have that? The main problem with Circular is; they either don’t know how to build a climax in their songs or they either just want to annoy the listener. I’m afraid it’s the first one though. A pity, because most songs could be so much better when they would have used the actual climax the songs are heading towards.
Production wise, this EP is not even close to the ‘big productions’ you’re used to. But for some reason I think it totally fits Circular. It reminds you of the fact you’re listening to a local band that has still a lot of work to do to make it out there. And I gotta admit it, this one is a local band with potential. Although they definitely need to work out the songs a bit more next time.
