Secht - True Narcotic Black Metal
Secht is a project consisting of members of several Norwegian Black Metal bands. Dirge Rep (Orcustus, Gorgoroth, Neetzach) and Vrangsinn (Carpathian Forest, Hatepulse, Neetzach) are responsible for the music as well as Nordavind (Carpathian Forest) on fiddle. Yes indeed, fiddle! An impressive list of guests is responsible for the vocals on this album: Gaahl, Nocturno Culto, Hoest, Nattefrost, Nag, Appolyon and Nordavind. This group of maniacs locked themselves away in a cabin in the forest, got completely wasted and recorded 37 minutes of “satanic madness.” I expected it to be awesome, since a great part of the Norwegian Black Metal elite participated. Boy was I wrong!!

The album consists of one track. This doesn’t have to be bad, bands like Arcturus or Sleep have done similar things and I like those. True Narcotic Black Metal is the best title they could have picked for this album, because everyone was probably too damn fucked up on all sorts of drugs to play anything decent.

The album starts with the sound of rain and an acoustic guitar playing a repetitive tune. A moaning, screeching voice comes in, accompanied by a little girls voice and a bit later slow drums. It sounds pretty disturbing, but a bit cheesy. Howling wolves follow. So far it sounds OK... Now the mayhem begins. First thing I notice is that it all sounds like it was recorded in 1990, which is another way of saying the production is terrible. Some people call this “true,” I call it crap.

After a while I realise this is probably just one big jam, not worthy to put on CD if you ask me. There are some nice parts in it, but I’m having a lot of trouble taking this seriously.
Furthermore, the greater part of the music is just eerie sounds with a lot of feed backing guitars and guys screaming like their balls are on fire.

I understand what makes good Black Metal: it’s not about great musicianship or clean productions. It’s about creating a dark atmosphere, an expression of the evil, depressed and aggressive parts of the human mind. But this album is way too infantile and in no way original to do just that. It’s like they opened up a can of clichés and used them very badly.

I guess they had a lot of fun recording this nonsense, but except for their friends and families I don’t think too many people will be interested. Oh, that’s right: you’re not supposed to have fun if you play Black Metal… They probably had a grim ol’ time and a lot of evil, frostbitten laughter. Their mum’s are probably very proud of them.
