Satyricon, Evile, Zonaria - Staying Dark in Rotterdam
Zonaria

Sweden's Zonaria hails from the same town as 'legends' Meshuggah and Refused (and quite some other bands as well). The band kicked off the night with their mix of melodic death metal, spiced up with a few black metal influences here and there. The band played tight, but the music didn't really convince because of the not so exciting stage presence and mediocre sound. Still, the band had some headbangable moments and I wouldn't mind seeing them again in a better situation. (Carn)

Evile

The band Evile has been brought to my attention by name many times, but I’ve never heard their music before. The British foursome plays a combination of Metallica and Slayer speed/thrash which grooves and bashes superbly. Sitting still is no option with this band playing.
A talented guitarist who can also play some excellent solos lifts this band over the average, making this one of the better bands in the thrash genre. It’s just too bad that the vocalist really fails to convince which becomes more and more apparent as the show progresses. For the rest this is a great band to drink beer with and bang your head to! Satyricon

It took me a long time to the point that I started to enjoy black metal, but one of the First black metal bands that really drew my attention was certainly the Norwegian Satyricon. Especially their album Now, Diabolical out of 2006, I consider to be a modern day black metal classic. In November they released their new album called The Age Of Nero and luckily this album is of the same quality. I was pretty anxious to see them on this tour.

Satyricon o
pened the night with the most brutal song of their new album called ‘Commando’. This song is full with strong blast-beats and up-tempo riffing; they took the crowd by surprise and gained their interest straight away. What followed was a strong setlist with older songs from albums like The Shadowthrone and Dark Medieval Times, but also with a lot of newer songs from Volcano and Now, Diabolical and the new album. Especially the songs from their new album and from Now, Diabolical stood out from everything else, that’s mainly because those albums have a crusty, almost rock ‘n roll underbelly feel to its black metal sound. That’s of course a personal opinion though! Musically the band performed almost perfectly; hard, loud, dirty and tight as hell!
Was there nothing to complain about Satyricon's performance? Hell yeah! I personally thought black metal is all about the atmosphere and dark underbelly-feel such bands create on stage. Satyr probably thought otherwise, because his performance was almost if he played in front of a massive football-stadium crowd, instead of the cozy and small Waterfront. He played the crowd with loads of “put your hands in the air” type of slogans and with of lot of “Hey”, “Hay’s”! That type of stuff should work well for a band as Metallica, but he killed the atmosphere for his own band entirely! On the other hand, the young, spotty black metal teenagers ate it like sweet candy. (RoyBalowski)
