Straw - Burned
Straw is a pretty new, four-member band that have reached their current line-up only in March 2006. So, already a demo sent to Metalrage within half a year is pretty impressive. At least the guys must have some kind of ambition to spread their music around the globe don’t you think?
Okay, it’s only a four track promo, but at least it’s something. But to be honest, even without this information, it’s clear that the songs have been recorded in too much of a hurry. The mixture between heavy metal and hardcore that Hatebreed seems to master perfectly sounds nice at first listen, when ‘Smothered Years’ kicks in, but gets frustrated almost immediately.
The bass is way too loud, the vocals remind you of a bad James Hetfield imitator (or imagine that pimp in the movie ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’) and the attempts to fuse with other genres, like on ‘Nothing’s Man (Fat Bastard Blues)’ are funny for only half a second. Then, when some vocal lines are repeated over and over again, my mood starts to decrease really fast and my fingers touch the stop-button of my cd-player faster than I’d like.
Maybe a bit more patience will do the band some good. It’s obvious that the enthusiasm is present in this band but in order to get signed, Straw still has got a hell of a lot of work to do.
