Voivod - Katorz
Imagine this; one of your closest friends suffers from cancer. He’s also your guitar player in a band but he’s in the hospital and he’s not getting better again. However, until his last day, he keeps writing music in his bed with a laptop on the side of his bed and a guitar in his hands, proving that the band is worth fighting for. Then he explains how he’s recorded his guitar riffs until the drummer truly understands it. The day afterwards, he looses consciousness.

This is what happened to Voivod and Denis ‘Piggy’ D’Amour. Having a lot of new material, the other members went into the studio and Katorz is the result of this.
Maybe it’s because of the information in advance, but the sphere on the album is pretty emotional and the sound goes back to the punk-influence that Voivod got familiar with, pretty much different from Voivod, their previous record.

Keeping this in mind, and considering the demo-like production, the sphere is very pure which does the raw vocals really good. Opener ‘The Getaway’ still is pretty accessible and fast, but after that, ‘Mr Clean’ with its weird guitar loops and ‘After All’ prove that this album has not been worked out for a particular target audience.

The integrity is, as a result of this, enormous while the accessibility decreases. I think that a lot of people get confused by the album and leave it aside. But for the die-hard fans: this 14th Voivod album is so full of emotions that it drags you down deep into the souls of rock & roll music that it will be a ride you won’t forget. Mister Piggy can be very proud of his colleagues.
