Disarmonia Mundi - Mind Tricks
Disarmonia Mundi started out in 2000 as a soloproject by Ettore Rigotti, which resulted into the pretty neat album called Nebularium. Somewhere in 2002 the band’s music caught the ear of Soilwork singer Bjorn Strid, and this collaboration resulted into the record Fragments of D-Generation. Since both parties were happy with the result, the third and new record Mind Tricks was recorded with Strid and Claudio Ravinale (vocals).

I will probably be the 300th reviewer who says “hey these guys sound like Soilwork” but you just can’t get around that fact if you have Bjorn Strid on vocals while the rest of the music sounds a lot like all those Scandinavian modern-melodic (death) metal bands you might have heard of. Most vocal lines are switched between Strid and Ravinale (who has a nasty scream I might say). It’s impressive if you realise that Rigotti wrote and played the bulk of the music. Next to a great guitarist he is also a very capable drummer, and his layered keyboard parts really spice up a lot of the songs in a melodic fashion. Awesome job my dear pasta-friend! The Pantera cover “Mouth for War” is a great finisher as well.

The thing that I am missing on this record is the lack of some more uptempo, brutal work (like the song “Burning Cells” on their debut album). Mind Tricks feels like an album that has been drawn between two well known borders set by their Scandinavian peers, but it rarely goes over those borders. It is by all accounts a good album which really should get these guys some more attention since it’s full of well written songs and hopefully they can add something to the genre in the future.
