Eagles Of Death Metal - Death By Sexy...
To be honest, I do not recall hearing their first effort, but after hearing this one I’m bound to check it out. Jesse Hughes and Joshua Homme, aka Boots Electric and Baby Duck are back with an album filled with after-party rock ‘n roll tunes with escapades towards all kind of genres. And they’re here to make Little Richard proud, they deliver us Death By Sexy…

The basic ingredients for this effort are, rock ‘n roll, comedy, stoner, guest musicians, country, and of course the proverbial death metal. The album stands for a whole lot of fun to me, just give me a case of beer and a bag of pot and I can listen to this over and over. But although it doesn’t sound as a serious release, they managed to create a very good musical album nonetheless. It’s just very hard to describe though, because one moment you’re trapped in a barnyard dance track, while the next can be a sexy rock ‘n roll homage to nineteen year old girls. Full of surprises is definitely a term for Death By Sexy…

I believe that Joshua isn’t in the band anymore, and neither is he playing the drums on this album. He does basslines and backing vocals, as well as black and white ivories, whatever that may mean. The drums are done by Joey Sexy Mexy Castillo (while the website says he did do it), and the rest of the album is filled with guest musicians as well. There even is a guest performance by Liam Lynch, remember him?

I’ve heard the album quite some times now and I still don’t get bored by it. Especially the drunken countryrock song ‘Chase The Devil’ always manages to put a smile on my face. Furthermore I got a newfound respect towards high vocals in pop-orientated music thanks to witnessing Scissor Sisters live, which is a hilarious experience, as well as a revelation. And after hearing this album I feel kinda sorry I didn’t check out the EODM at Pukkelpop.
Thank heavens that I do have the album now, which will entertain me for numerous times now I guess.
