Sabatan - Fire Angel
And the price for the greatest album cover goes to…….Sabatan!!! Wow, seldom have I been impressed by such a nice artwork as on this record, performed by a group of Spanish musicians. The biography looks simple but has an everlasting sentence which I would like to share with you: ‘Our objective is to send this cd to the majority of magazines, radios, webzines and to divulge our work as much as we can, maybe in this way we can have an opportunity to be known as a heavy metal band.’
That last sentence got my sympathy very much which made me even more curious. At first sight this album looks a little bit messy. The music is very, very much formed by very, very traditional heavy metal. Well, actually everything about this band is in the line of traditional heavy metal. Sabatan actually reminds me of Dream Evil but everything is a bit less. The sound is less bombastic, the production less fine, the music less technical, the vocals less strong and the lyrics less cliché. The separate songs aren’t that great, every now and then I hear some mistakes and the drums are placed too much on the foreground (although this does lead in a bombastic sound) which leads in a diminished bass and guitar sound. However, songs like ‘Stay Heavy’ and ‘Fire Angel’ are pretty strong and convincing with nice and heavy guitar riffs, which made me realize something after a few listening sessions.
Sometimes you get the feeling about a band that they really enjoy themselves and feel honored to be in a band that is able to spread themselves a bit further than the local pub. You just hear that between the notes and you can read it between the lines. And although the separate songs might not offer you the quality melodies you desire from the Gods in the scene, you feel sympathy for the band, especially when they’ve written these five lines in which you can identify yourself so music with, that you grab a beer, jump on the table and want to shout as loud as you can: HEAVY FUCKING METAAAAL!!!!!!
On stage I want to shake my head
On scene I want to rape your ears
Heavy metal is the law
You know we know they must know
Nothing can break our dreams tonight
