My Shameful - The Return To Nothing
My Shameful was founded in 1999 in Finland as a project by two men. In the following years after this it became a one man project, until right after the release of … Of Dust record when key-songwriter Sami Rautio was joined by a drummer, bassist and guitarist. Together they created this new record The Return To Nothing, released on Firebox Records.
The style My Shameful makes is definitely funeral doom, better known as death/doom to some. My personal preferences within doom metal lay more in the stoner direction, but The Return To Nothing certainly was a pleasant surprise. The reason for that is the atmosphere the music exhales. It’s very relaxed and spacey, and they manage to keep that vibe going throughout the record. Of course it is also depressing as hell, which is also the main reason I’m not a big fan of this type of music. Lyrical topics like wanting to give up, regret and self-disgust are absolutely not my cup of tea. I just prefer to be happy.
But for those that already have razors pressing against their arteries, this might just be the thing to convince you to actually do it! And I mean that in a good way, I think… For the style these guys play there certainly is enough variation to keep things interesting, in both music and vocals. It’s just very, very, very, very slow and heavy, like it’s supposed to be.
I can’t really compare to other bands because it simply isn’t a genre I’m very familiar with, but a name like Officium Triste certainly comes to mind. So if anyone feels like this Christmas is lonelier than ever and you want to end it all, just ask Santa to bring you The Return To Nothing.
