Before The Dawn once started as a solo project of Tuomas Saukkonen but after a while it turned out to become a band. This didn't last very long and in the end it became a solo band once agian. Luckily enough Tuomas Saukkonen doesn’t quit very easily and nowadays he even likes it being a solo project. Every time he has a gig he has his own session musicians and he is in complete control. This finally resulted in the fourth full length album of Before The Dawn called Deadlight.

 

Starting the album with ´Wrath´ that is a fast song with a lot of melody which is probably because of the vocals in the chorus. The following song is much heavier and darker, with a very slow drumbeat that gives the song exactly what it needs. Continuing with the album it gets more and more obvious that Tuomas Saukkonen wants to challenge the listener with Before The Dawn.

 

The songs on this album move between the lines of Sentenced, Amorphis, Katatonia and Dark Tranquillity. It´s of course an honour to be compared by this bands but Before The Dawn manages to hold your attention during several songs with great structures and strong musical passages. Especially ´Deadsong´ is a great example of this. This song is also the single of this album. It´s only a bit weird the last song doesn't have a name or it has to be ´...´ especially considering this is one of the better songs on this album.

 

Overall I can say that Deadlight is an album that could be interesting for fans of the bands that are mentioned before. For the rest of the evil world that is called Metal I would say give the band a try. Especially when you consider that Tuomas Saukkonen played in numerous of other bands that you might like.
