Bloodbath - The Wacken Carnage
This is a capture of the one and only “live” gig Bloodbath ever did. They played a truly mind blowing set on the Wacken Open Air festival in 2005. That’s about the only thing I don’t understand about this release. Why did it take over 3 years to put out these brilliant recordings?
Bloodbath is the death-metal supergroup from Stockholm, Sweden. This band was formed in 2000, by an all-star line-up featuring Katatonia’s Anders Nyström on guitar and Jonas Renske on bass, Opeth’s Mikael Akerfeldt on vocals, with musician and producer Dan Swanö on guitars. On the drum kit we find Opeth’s Martin ‘Axe’ Axenrot. This band is formed as a hobby band and their mutual fascination for oldschool death-metal.
This disc contains two discs. The first disc is the whole W.O.A. gig in audio version and the second disc is the DVD version of the gig. From the first note of the intro, you can feel the excitement of the audience. The sound of the recordings is excellent. They blast the audience away with the first song called ‘Cancer Of The Soul’   which is from their album Nightmares Made Flesh from 2004. This is the shit! When I try to explain people, how death-metal should sound like this is what I got in mind! Brutal, fast, dirty and aggressive as hell.
It’s also great to finally hear the brutal grunt of Mikael Akerfeldt in a band where it should be sung in. In Opeth he only uses his extreme, aggressive grunt just half the time. What a voice… The set continues with songs from both Resurrection Through Carnage and Nightmares Made Flesh. With the fifth song called ‘Ways To The Grave’ Mikael Akerfeldt proves to be a great entertainer as well. He asks the crowd to response in a death-metal voice and later on in a Dani Filth high-pitched scream. Funny! All though he uses the same joke for a couple of times in the set…
The set continues with a track from their very first EP ever. This song called ‘Ominous Bloodvomit’ is again just a pure death-metal classic, which easily is up there with the classics of Entombed, Dismember and Grave. Pure fucking Swedish oldschool death-metal! No time to rest, because the next neck breaking headbanger is already ripping out of your stereo. This band filled with professionals sounds as tight as a clock, it’s like they do this stuff every day. Absolute highlight of the set is the song ‘Eaten’ ,this song is just an adreline pumping headbanger which makes you scream for more. Lyrically this song deals about the ‘cannibal of Rotenburg’ named Arwin Meiwes. The guy that ate a person by meeting him on the internet in 2006.
After listening to this disc it makes me really regret, that I wasn’t there. The DVD disc with the entire show filmed eases the pain a little bit. After writing this review, my neck hurts like hell and my room is a total mess… Damn Bloodbath rules!
