Letzte Instanz - Weißgold

The, mostly in Germany, popular Letzte Instanze celebrated its 10th anniversary with a couple of acoustic shows. One of these shows, the concert in a church in their hometown Dresden, was recorded for a DVD-release. Besides just this concert, the band decided to release a double-DVD that also contains 3 documentaries, footage of their performance on Wacken Open Air 2007, the video clip of ‘Wir Sind Allein’ and as an extra bonus, two songs from guest violinist Anna Kränzlein.

The Lukaskirche is the perfect place for this acoustic gig. The sound is great and the whole picture is just beautiful. Unfortunately the lights aren’t very spectacular, but that’s the only point of criticism about the whole setting. The lack of a spectacular light-show is compensated with a great performance of the band. Songs like ‘Ohne Dich’ (not a Rammstein-cover), ‘Sandmann’ and ‘Wir Sind Allein’ are very impressive, but they also prove they know how to party with a song like ‘Rapunzel’. Also the interaction with the crowd is admirable. The crowd sits just a couple of feet away from the stage and this creates a very intimate atmosphere. On stage it is a bit more occupied than during a normal Letzte Instanz-show, because the band has invited three guests to realize the acoustic translation of their normal songs. Besides the aforementioned Anna Kränzlein (Schandmaul), Frau Schmitt (Subway To Sally) and Leandra (Jesus On Extasy) are also present to help their colleagues out. Especially Leandra’s performance on the piano and as backing vocalist stand out. During the regular set she even gets some time to perform her own song ‘Angeldaemon’, which is a nice little brake from all the strings-filled Letzte Instanz-songs. These strings are beautiful additives to each song individually, but after a two-hour show I can imagine people being fed up with them though.

The show of the band on Wacken Open Air isn’t comparable with the main-show quality-wise, but it’s a nice additive to see how the band normally plays its gigs. With a lot of fun and jumping, they present us nine highly entertaining songs. The little cover of Kiss’ ‘I Was Made For Loving You’ in between ‘Rapunzel’ was also played very well, but unfortunately Holly’s vocals weren’t made for singing this song. They would have done better leaving that one out of the set. The documentary Auf Weisser Tour is also very nice when you’re into Letzte Instanz. When you’re watching it without being a real fan of the band, this documentary will bore you very much though. The stories about living in a bus etcetera, are the same as with any other touring band and therefore it’s nothing special. The other two short documentaries about the crew and about being backstage aren’t subtitled, so they’re not that interesting for people who don’t speak German.

All in all this is a nice release for the fans of Letzte Instanz and it’s a good introduction to the band when you’re not familiar with them. The down-side of this package is that it’s too much focused on their German fans and that’s not helping when you’re trying to reach fans abroad.
