Despised Icon - The Healing Process
Canadian based Despised Icon was formed featuring members of bands like Neuraxis, In Dying Days and Heaven's Cry. The band released their first album (Consumed by your Poison) in October 2002, to be followed by the EP Syndicated Monsters in 2004. Their latest album, The Healing Process, is their first record on Century Media.
If heavy, full-force, grind/metal/death/core isn't your thing, you can just stop reading. The biography speaks of a death/metalcore band, and Despised Icon deliver exactly that. Think bands like fellow Canadians Ion Dissonance, or stuff like the older Dying Fetus. More recently, Glass Casket and The Red Chord come to mind.
Despised Icon utilizes two vocalists results into a good mix of low grunts, high screams and the always classic pig-sound. The band itself seem to be some damn good players, and the drummer is just insane. Blastbeats, breakdowns, it seems the guy has the complete package. Guitarwise and songwise, no song uses a simple song structure. Riffs and time changes as if it's nothing, and it could very well be that the longest riff might be 16 measures.

"Immaculate" is one of my favorite songs of the disc, because it's one of the few songs where the band actually holds in. There is a short, almost ambient sounding acoustic part in that, which works as a great build-up for the songs final. It's hard to pick out "best" songs since most of them have their own great parts, ranging from hardcore breakdowns to insane riffs and blastbeats. The production of this album is excellent, everything sounds clear and defined. Personally I prefer this over the "sludgy" sound some of these bands tend to have.
Again, it's always hard to critise these kind of bands, since they are just damn good at what they do. Personally I would like to see a few more slower paced moments. This CD is a 35 minute aural attack, a death/grind mindfuck, and I actually needed some breathing now and then to listen on. The guys are all excellent musicians and the sound they have will surely turn a few heads their way. So if you like your metal fast and ferocious, this might be your thing!
