Fall Of The Leafe - Vantage
A short intro to the band as from the cover artwork:
Ten years down the road, and mining deep beyond its melodic death metal origin, Fall of the Leafe has found an increasingly personal style. Scandinavian metal is still there. Still, but not alone. There is something from the pioneering gothic rock bands and a taste of guitar driven British rock. Give it a second spin and hints of the personal likings of musicians will come forward from 70’s action rock to grunge.

And that’s kind of the fundamental element for the whole album. I just can’t describe this music as one style but I think the intro is coming close. Which means the music is varying quite a lot from the music I hear nowadays in the rock/metal-world. And it’s varying in a positive way, for sure! Although the production and vocals seem to give the album a bit of a too smooth and soft character. Now that wouldn’t even be a problem to me if it wasn’t up to the vocalist which has a great but oh so, unoriginal voice! And I don’t mean an unoriginal voice because he sings like thousands of others do, no, I mean he’s singing every song in a way you get the idea that you’re listening to the same song 12 times in a row.

At first I could appreciate this band quite a lot, but that was mainly because of the fact I just don’t listen to this kind of music very often. Later on, the vocals made me giving a bit of a lower score I expected in the beginning. The vocals are just too smooth and too much the same. Give me some screams or grunts and I’ll be so much happier to be the owner of this album!

All in all I can’t say ‘Vantage’ is a bad album, but as for the vocal parts, I’m missing a lot of variation! Too bad! ‘cause the music would be appreciated by quite some people I guess. Though, people who’d like to hear something different, shouldn’t be afraid to give this disc a spin.
