MyGrain - Signs Of Existence
Before checking out MyGrain’s new record Signs Of Existence, I first went back into history by spinning their previous record Orbit Dance again. Orbit Dance was released in the spring of 2006, when I was really into this modern melodic death metal stuff. Back then I gave it a lot of playtime, and I must say that I still like it now I listened to it again. Time to check out their new effort!

The first notable fact I become aware of is the more full-grown sound on Signs Of Existence. I’m not sure whether that’s positive or not, because Orbit Dance was full of melodies and therefore a bit frisky, but that did work really well, showing the creativity of MyGrain’s members. The creativity on the new record is still there, but more restrained while the production is fatter and more solid too.

Among the stronger tracks on the album are ‘The Psychonaut’, a very catchy song with a brutal undertone, ‘Alienation’, which could easily be a track on Soilwork’s Stabbing The Drama album, while also ‘This Perfect Chaos’ is very comparable with Soilwork but still from a high level.

It might be hard to come with a successor of a really good debut, but Signs Of Existence will surely not let you down. Although this album sounds more predictable then its predecessor does, it still features a strong foundation of modern Scandinavian metal which resulted in a catchy and strong record. Besides that I’d like to make the comparison with Sonic Syndicate, whose debut was also overloaded with great melodies, while their following up was really weak. This is with MyGrain definitely not the case!
