Dark Tranquillity - Where Death Is Most Alive
Dark Tranquillity is already wandering this earth since 1989 and is still active in creating the typical Swedish death metal sound with their own twist. Within their 20 years the band evolved from fast death metal music to a more melodic approach of death metal with sometimes even some clean vocals and gothic influences.

Where Death Is Most Alive is the second DVD of the band. They stated that Live Damage was okay at that time, but now it was time to offer something special. Something that could live up to the high expectations of the fans. Something that can be seen within the preparation of the DVD. For example the entire show was shot by 8 camera’s in HD. Which resulted in a very sharp image.

The place of action was the Rolling Stone Club in Milan where the fans are the best Dark Tranquility can wish for, at least according to the band. During the entire set the Italians are proving themselves by chanting along with the lyrics and the melody of the songs. This gives the band clearly an extra boost lifts the show to another level. Because of the dedication of the crowd, there´s an ongoing interaction between the band and the crowd which results in some great footage on the DVD. Since the show was filmed on the Fiction tour that album is very well represented during the show. Seven songs of that album are played and the remaining 14 songs are divided over their previous six albums.

Disc 2 of the set contains a lot of background material on the band. There is the documentary called Out Of Nothing where the entire history of the band is told by some of the band members. They go back to their first rehearsing space, the local youth centre and the neighborhood where they all grew up. Along the way producer Fredrik Lindstrom and Thomas Lindgren from At The Gates also add stories about the music scene at that time. Next to the documentary there´s also another great feature called The Live Archive which contains a lot of live video footage of the band starting from the first days in 1991 up till some shows that where played in 2007.

I can say that Dark Tranquillity truly created a masterpiece. The show is a lust for the eye. Especially since there are 8 different camera positions, but luckily no fast shifting between those images. During the show there´s a great deal of crowd reaction and interaction. The special features on the second DVD are much more than the usual making of or studio report footage. I´d say that this DVD is a must have for every Swedish death metal fan.
