Demonical - Hellsworn
Metalrage receives an unimaginable number of death metal records every month. Sometimes it’s hard to separate the good from the bad, especially with the incredible amount of new bands. Demonical however, caught my attention immediately after reading “for fans of: Dismember, Vomitory, Carnage” on the promo sheet, instead of praising the band as the next Cannibal Corpse or Suffocation as usual. Demonical return to where it all started, the roots of death metal. Expect some ‘death metal darkness’, as they like to call it themselves!
Demonical is ready to strike with their second full length album since 2007’s Servants of the Unlight. Since the debut album the band did two full European tours with bands like Nunslaughter and Denial of God and parted ways with singer Ludvig Engellau, replacing him with Sverker Widgren. “I’m the devil, and I’m here to do the devils work”, a slightly cliché sample from the well known movie ‘The Devil’s Rejects’ opens up the first track ‘Baptized In Fire’. It results in such a heavy pure Swedish death metal sound we haven’t heard properly in while!
Even though the band has nothing new to offer, this is the perfect compilation of the last 20 years of Swedish death metal and beyond. Think some Swedish gods such as Unleashed and Entombed who spent studio time with Vomitory and Morbid Angel. For overtriggered blastbeats you’ll have to look somewhere else, this is pure! Armed with annihilating heavy guitar parts from only one guitarist, deep doom-like breakdown parts and classic grunt vocals, Hellsworn is nicely finished with some rightfully placed movie quotes.
Maybe it’s the fact that the album was recorded in the same studio as black metal’s finest such as Waitain, Ondskapt and Ofermod record their albums, but the album has a really nice creepy low-tuned atmosphere. Old school death metal with modern recording techniques. We’ve heard it all before, but we don’t mind hearing it once more; properly!
