Delain - A Day For True Fans
The project band Delain has released their debut album on September 4th. The band has been initiated by (ex-Within Temptation) keyboardist Martijn Westerholt. He has surrounded himself with a number of extremely talented musicians such as Finnish bassist Marko Hielata (Nightwish, Tarot), guitarist Jan Yrlund (ex-Lacrimosa) and Norwegian vocalist Liv Kristine (ex-Theatre of Tragedy, Leaves' Eyes). A number of renowned Dutch rock musicians contributed to the project as well: singer Sharon den Adel (Within Temptation), guitarist Ad Sluyter (Epica), drummer Ariën van Weezenbeek (God Dethroned), singer George Oosthoek and guitarist Guus Eikens (ex-Orphanage). Delain has room for new talent as well: the young and relatively unknown singer Charlotte Wessels (ex-To Elysium) contributed most of the vocals on the album.

On September 23rd the band did its first full live set in Hedon (Zwolle, NL) and Metalrage was there to watch this gig. The support act The Wounded started the evening with a long technical set which I didn’t really like. And because I did not really liked their show I decided to drink something in the bar. The Wounded played a long set so I had to wait quite some time!

But at 10.30 PM Delain finally entered the stage. The venue was packed with 500 fans and the show was sold out. I had already seen the set list of this night and saw they were going to play every single song on their album. And due to a lot of guest vocalists I was wondering about the live presentation of the songs. The band started with the opening song of their album ‘Sever’ and vocalist Charlotte was very nervous at first. Luckily for her she found some confidence after two songs. The other musicians are well known with being on stage and they were giving the present audience an awesome show.

When the band played the song ‘PristineGeorge was introduced and the band lived up instantly. The qualities of George as an artist are amazing. He is well known with performing and he knew what to do to get the audience move along with the music. A couple of songs later it was time to introduce Andre as the replacement for Nightwish bassist Marco Hietala. And what a surprise he gave us. His vocals are of an amazing quality and he surprised everybody in the venue with his interpretation of Marco’s voice. He sounds alike with his own twist, this combination is something which I wasn’t expecting this night!

Until the end of the set it was obvious Charlotte wasn’t really comfortable on stage. But thanks to her smile, vocal qualities and appearance everybody present could see she sure got true potential. She just needs to get loosen up, get the stage feeling and express more.

Well, as you might expect I was surprised by this first real Delain show. The band has managed to create a good live show and feeling with some new vocalists. Some fine-tuning still needs to be done but Delain is going strong already!
