Trentemøller / Den Sorte Skole - Beautiful darkness comes alive in Trentemoller's dynamical live set
Expect the unexpected on Metalrage. You might not expect Trentemøller on a metalsite but with his latest album ‘Lost’ the Danish master is diving into darker holes as many metal bands today. With hints to Indie, New-Wave, Post Punk and Post Rock the original minimal Techno DJ is exploring his territories and so are we doing with the registration of this show. With a complete band he’s presenting his new album and old classics in the Effenaar tonight.

First is Den Sorte Skole. The collective made 10.000 samples of 251 old records out of 51 countries of 6 continents. Think of Moroccan folklore, Indian hymns, long forgotten Slavonic Psych, French avant-garde rock and early German electro. The two DJs proved to be a perfect warm-up daring the crowd with the weird sounds that were combined into a mix to pump up everyone.

After some dark moody songs as waiting time before the real thing begins a Post Punk inspired bass line is filling the void. It’s pure and catchy at the same time (hours after the show it still sticks in your head) and it’s the beginning of ‘Still on Fire’; one of the best songs of the new album Lost. The sound of the bass is organic, grooving, honest and will show up more and more during the set. It’s the perfect startup for the songs Trentemøller has created during the years. He has discovered an old seventies organ together with an eighties synthesizer; the sounds he’s coming up with are translated in songs mixing indie, postrock, techno, disco. There is never a moment you feel this is a melting pot without going anywhere. Hell no, Danish dynamics is what he showing us, everything fits together fluently.

The Danish chameleon is at one time going crazy with his band in a ten minute psychedelic rock part until there is a break and the crowds goes loose on pumping techno he’s famous for. It’s electronic music, due to the real drums it stays so human and real. The energy is flowing through the ether and this band shows how to create future music without forget the past. The dark edge, the light show and the background art has sucked the listener into a moving show full of dynamics.

On some moments when all layers are behaving towards a climax even a band like Cult of Luna (in terms of heaviness) came to my mind. On the quiet moments vocalist Marie Fisker (who also handled the bass and guitar) impressed the crowd with her voice in ‘Candy Tongue’ and ‘Never Stop Running’. The rock ‘n roll / techno mash up of Silver Surfer, Ghost Rider Go!!! functions as goodbye song. Full of energy and still excited the crowd only could think how brilliant the last one and half hour was. Trentemøller showed how to bridge modern music with dark psychedelic stuff from the past and upgrade into songs of the future.
