Generation of Vipers is a perfect band name for the howling and crawling Sludge Metal/Noise Rock displayed on Howl and Filth. Six songs of thunderous riffs, a heavy guitar sound and aggressive vocals makes this record more intense and accurate than a lot of bands in the still expanding genre. The band already released two albums in 2005 and 2007. Translation Loss released this baby in 2012 and Golden Antenna gives it birth in Europe now.
The experience and intensity is dripping from the first two songs ‘Ritual’ and ‘Silent Shroud’. Perfectly produced (heavy without sounding clean or sterile) the songs are striving towards the perfect climax. Meanwhile on the road there are thunderous drums, massive riffs and dissonant sharp guitar noises. A vocalist who is truly pissed off completes it. Yes, put Mouth of the Architect and Botch in a blender and you’ll have Generation of Vipers. ‘All of this is mine’ is a piano intermezzo and very welcome after the first two attacks. Next up is ‘Eternal’ which is a relatively short outburst of sheer aggression. It has the hardcore spirit of the first wave of Hydrahead releases.
‘Slow Burn’ is the best title to imagine for song five; it has a lot of instrumental parts and the riffs are slowing moving forward as a stream of lava can do. Once again the guitar sound is immense heavy with dissonance feedback thrown over it. The same recipe is going on for the last song ‘The Misery Coil. Thrown over all this filth are the distorted vocals of guitar player Josh Holt. In this song the band is carrying the torch of Isis during their ‘Mosquito control’ period. It’s really a long time ago that a band surprises me in this genre. The record is over in less than forty minutes. The urge to push the play button once again is most likely when you listen to the band’s third album.
Generation of Vipers is coming over to Europe and will play the Incubate festival on Sunday 22th of September. Don’t miss this heavy orchestra. With recording engineer Travis Kammeyer in the ranks as bass player this must sound impressive on stage as it did on this third monster Howl and Filth.
